In order to be a sucessful biologist most people have to go to school for quite a while to get a phd. Well who is going to pay for it? College is expensive and while scholarships are great I'm looking for something a little more reliable. Not only do I need to pay for classes and school suplies, I need to earn money to live on aswell. So how can I get both of these? Well I'm going to join the National Guard as soon as I get down to weight. This I think will be a good experience for me. The National Guard will allow me to go to school, earn money, and pick up some invaluable experiences.
In order to track down animals and treck through wilderness you have to be in pretty good physical condition, not to mention you will have to rough it most of the time. So all in all, the millitary will help me with my career as well. (Watch, I end up in a zoo lol.) \
Right now im ROTC and working hard to get into shape. Eating right can be sort of hard though.
All the times I'm not doing homework or working out I have been reading a really great book by Peter Stienbeck (might be incorrect) Its called
The Company of Wolves and through this book I have come to realize that no one around here knows anything about wolves. All the statements I am hearing from the locals around here are WRONG they are only opionon, speculation, and make believe. I keep trying to tell them where they are wrong but no one is listening, they dont care what I have to say, or how many bioligists I quote. As long as they can kill they dont give a damn. Its really starting to aggrivate me.
This book though, has alot of information in it. It has different oppions in it and references many biologists and books. Especially David Mech (Meech) who is said to be the "Alpha" in wolf research. I'm afriad the battle for nature and for wildlife is a losing one, but I am sure as hell going to try.
On another note, my Grandfather who lives in Iowa wanted me to call him so I did. He had heard from my mother that I was changing my Major to Wildlife Biology and he was soo happy that I did so. When I went to visit him this summer we both got into a very passionate conversation about wildlife conservation and most specifically wolves. He told me how proud of me he was and if I can remeber correctly he said something along these lines. "Those animal rights bleeding hearts are good people, they have the right idea but they go about it the wrong way and view wildlife almost like pets that need protected, but you know who can really make a difference, the scientists. You will be able to make a difference." Those words got me all teary eyed. I love my Grandfather very much and I am glad to make him proud.
